Stephan Schmidt was born in Schwenningen on Neckar, Germany. He is considered one of the most innovative guitarists of his generation, most keen on experimenting.
He started his academic training at the Musikhochschule in Trossingen. Parallel to this, he pursued a year's academic training under Betho Davezac in Paris, specializing in the performing practice of Early Music.
In 1986 he obtained the soloist diploma with distinction under Alberto Ponce in Paris, and then completed his training under Manuel Barrueco in New York.
He has won first prizes at many international competitions.
As a soloist he has performed with notable orchestras round the world.
Close collaborations with distinguished composers and his discovery of the ten-string guitar have had a considerable influence on his artistic work.
He has gained most prestigious awards for various Cd recordings.
From 1981 to 2001 Stephan Schmidt taught guitar and chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, Bern, where he was also in charge of the Freie Akademie from 1997 to 2001. Since 2002 he has been Director and professor at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel.
