Schloss Waldegg

Among the many country seats belonging to to the patrician classes of the Canton of Solothurn, Waldegg must be the most beautiful and also the most spacious. Two tree-lined avenues lead to the elevated castle and its baroque gardens. French and Italian stylistic elements blend with the more austere architecture of a so called Solothurn „Türmlihaus".
Castle Waldegg/Schloss Waldegg was erected between 1682 and 1686 by village mayor Johann Victor I von Besenval. In 1865 the estate was acquired by Joseph von Sury-Büssy. He turned the summer residence into an all-year residence. In 1963 the castle passed into the possession of the Canton of Solothurn, becoming a foundation subject to public law. Since 1991 the residence has been open to the public.
Schloss Waldegg is not only a museum but also serves as a centre of the Canton of Solothurn for cultural activities and social gatherings. As such the castle fosters the good relationship between the various areas of the Canton and of Switzerland. As the seat of the Cantonal Office for Culture and Sports, since 2005 the adjoining buildings have served the promotion of culture, thus assuming new functions.
