Ian Bousfield, newly appointed Professor of Trombone at the Hochschule der Künste Bern, is recognized the world over as being at the very top of his profession. Ian's nearly 30 years of orchestral work have seen him as Principal Trombone in the Halle Orchestra (1982-1988), then the London Symphony Orchestra (1988-2000), and subsequently the Vienna Philharmonic (2000-now). As a soloist, Ian has performed with the Vienna Philharmonic, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra, Sapporo Symphony, and the Austin Symphony with conductors Riccardo Muti, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Neville Marriner, Kent Nagano, Ion Marin and Matthias Bamert, and he has made solo recordings with EMI, Camerata, Chandos and Doyen. Solo career highlights include playing the Nina Rota Concerto with the Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti (2008) in Vienna, at the Lucerne Festival and in Tokyo, and giving the world premiere of Jonathan Dove's Stargazer with the London Symphony Orchestra under Michael Tilson Thomas (2007). He has performed with all of the world's major brass bands, recording with many of them and has been very active as a soloist and clinician internationally. In addition to his studio in Bern, Ian continues to advise at the Royal Academy of Music in London as well as at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
